Lao Tzu

601 BCE – 531 BCE

Lao Tzu (traditionally 6th century BCE) is the legendary Chinese philosopher credited as the author of the Tao Te Ching, one of the most translated and influential texts in world literature. His historical existence is debated—some scholars believe he was a contemporary of Confucius, while others suggest the Tao Te Ching is a compilation by multiple authors. Regardless, the philosophy attributed to him became the foundation of Taoism, one of China's three great philosophical and religious traditions alongside Confucianism and Buddhism. The Tao Te Ching, a slim volume of roughly 5,000 Chinese characters divided into 81 brief chapters, presents a vision of reality centered on the Tao (the Way)—an ineffable, all-encompassing force that underlies and permeates the natural world. Lao Tzu advocated wu wei (non-action or effortless action), the practice of aligning oneself with the natural flow of the universe rather than struggling against it. He valued simplicity, humility, and spontaneity, warning against the dangers of excessive ambition, rigid rules, and artificial complexity. His political philosophy favored small, self-sufficient communities governed with a light touch.
