Confucius (551–479 BCE), born Kong Qiu in the state of Lu during China's turbulent Spring and Autumn period, is the most influential philosopher in East Asian history. He spent much of his life as a wandering teacher and adviser, seeking a ruler who would implement his vision of benevolent governance, though he met with limited political success in his lifetime. His teachings, compiled by his disciples in the Analerta (Lunyu), center on the cultivation of personal virtue, filial piety, respect for elders and ancestors, and the pursuit of social harmony through proper conduct and ritual propriety (li). Central to his thought is the concept of ren—variously translated as benevolence, humaneness, or compassion—which he regarded as the highest moral achievement. He championed education as a means of self-improvement available to all, regardless of social class, and emphasized the importance of the "gentleman" (junzi) who leads by moral example rather than force. Confucianism went on to become the dominant philosophical and ethical framework of China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam for over two thousand years, shaping governance, education, family life, and social relations across East Asia.
