Lucius Annaeus Seneca

4 BCE – 65

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BCE–65 CE), commonly known as Seneca the Younger, was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and one of the wealthiest men in the Roman Empire. Born in Córdoba, Spain, he was educated in Rome and rose to prominence as an orator and writer before being exiled to Corsica by Emperor Claudius in 41 CE. Recalled eight years later, he became tutor and later chief adviser to the young Emperor Nero, during whose early reign he helped guide what historians regard as a period of good governance. His philosophical writings—including the Moral Letters to Lucilius, the essay On the Shortness of Life, On Anger, and On the Happy Life—blend Stoic principles with practical wisdom delivered in an elegant, accessible literary style. Seneca argued that philosophy should be a guide to daily living, not merely abstract speculation. He wrote frankly about the tension between his Stoic ideals and his enormous wealth, acknowledging his own imperfections. His relationship with Nero eventually deteriorated, and in 65 CE he was implicated in the Pisonian conspiracy and ordered to commit suicide, which he carried out with the composure his philosophy demanded.
