Michel de Montaigne

1533 – 1592

Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) was a French Renaissance philosopher, writer, and statesman who is credited with popularizing the essay as a literary form. Born to a wealthy family in the Périgord region, he received a remarkable humanist education—his father insisted he be raised speaking only Latin until age six. After a career in law and public service, he retired to his château's tower library to read, think, and write. His Essais, published between 1580 and 1595, are a vast, digressive, and deeply personal exploration of the human condition. The French word "essai" means "attempt," and Montaigne's essays are exactly that—tentative, questioning investigations into topics ranging from cannibalism and friendship to education, death, and the nature of experience. His famous motto, "Que sais-je?" ("What do I know?"), captures his skeptical approach to knowledge. Montaigne wrote with extraordinary candor about his own body, habits, fears, and contradictions, insisting that studying himself was a legitimate path to universal truths. His influence extends to Shakespeare, Pascal, Emerson, Nietzsche, and the entire tradition of personal writing.
