Ibn Rushd (Averroes)

Ibn Rushd (Averroes)

1126 – 1198

Ibn Rushd (1126–1198), known in the Latin West as Averroes, was an Andalusian Muslim philosopher, jurist, physician, and polymath. Born in Córdoba into a family of distinguished judges, he served as chief judge while maintaining a prodigious philosophical output. He is best known for his extensive commentaries on Aristotle, which earned him the title "The Commentator" among medieval European scholars and shaped how Aristotle was taught in universities for centuries, influencing Thomas Aquinas and Albertus Magnus. In The Decisive Treatise, Ibn Rushd argued that philosophy and Islamic revelation are complementary paths to truth—religion speaks through allegory while philosophy reveals truths through demonstration. His defense of rational inquiry challenged Al-Ghazali's anti-philosophical stance, which he rebutted in his Incoherence of the Incoherence. Despite his prestige, he fell from favor late in life and was briefly exiled under pressure from religious conservatives.
